E-adrese: How to activate a mandatory company email address—and why you need to do it today

Step-by-step instructions and consequences if not followed

  1. Your company still doesn’t have an activated e-mail address. Did you know that official government notifications are already being sent there, even if you don’t read them?

  2. What happens if the e-address is not activated – and can a company miss a tax demand or court notice?

  3. How to activate an e-address in 15 minutes – and what do you need to do this?

The company director received a call from the accountant: “We received a tax notice from the tax office for 8,000 euros in arrears. The response deadline was yesterday.” The notice was sent to the company’s email address. No one checked—they assumed the tax office would send it to a regular email.

Notifications to an e-mail address are considered delivered from the moment they are sent, regardless of whether anyone has accessed that email address.

What is an e-address?

E-adrese (official electronic address) is a secure government communication channel for official notifications. Accessible through the portal latvija.gov.lv.

Starting in 2024, e-addresses will be mandatory for all legal entities registered in Latvia. All official notifications from government agencies—the tax office, courts, the Enterprise Register, the PMLP, and local governments—are sent there.

How does an e-address differ from a regular email?

Regular email: unofficial, the state is not obliged to use it, there are no legal consequences for silence.

E-address: the official government channel; notifications are legally considered delivered from the moment they are sent; missed deadlines for notifications sent to your e-address are your responsibility.

Step-by-step instructions: activating an e-address for a legal entity

Step 1: Make sure you have eParaksts mobile or an eID card. Without an electronic signature, you cannot activate your e-address. (See separate instructions for how to obtain eParaksts.)

Step 2: Go to latvija.gov.lv. Log in using eParaksts mobile or your eID card.

Step 3: Go to the “E-adrese” or “Mans konts” (My account) section.

Step 4: Select “Activate e-address” for your company. If you are an authorized person (a board member with signatory authority), the system will automatically display the companies you manage.

Step 5: Confirm activation via eParaksts mobile – enter PIN2 or signature password.

Step 6: Done. The email address is activated. All official notifications will now be sent here.

The whole process takes 10-15 minutes.

How to set up notifications for new messages

Immediately after activation, set up notifications via regular email: in the email address settings, specify the email address to which you want to receive notifications of new messages. This doesn’t replace your email address—it’s just a signal to log in and read.

Designate a responsible employee: someone in the company who regularly checks the email address. At least once a week. For active companies, every business day.

What happens if the e-address is not activated?

Notifications will still be sent to your company’s email address—this is required by law. If the email address isn’t activated, messages accumulate there. The government considers them delivered. You are responsible for the consequences even if you haven’t read them.

Practical risks: missed deadline for responding to a tax authority request, missed court notice with a decision made in absentia, missed request from the Register of Enterprises to submit reports.

Who can activate a company’s e-address?

An e-address can be activated by a board member with signatory authority—one who is listed in the Register of Enterprises as an authorized person. If the board consists of several members and a joint signature is required, the presence of all authorized persons or a notarized power of attorney is required.

An accountant or employee without signatory authority cannot activate the system. Only through a power of attorney.
